Artist: Almendra
Song: Muchacha (Ojos de Papel)
Album: Almendra
What I say: Honestly have no idea what they’re saying. But I don’t care. Sounds sexy as hell.
About: Argentinean rock band Almendra was formed in 1967 by ex-los Larkins and ex-Sbirros. In September of 1968, the band released a single, including its songs “Tema de Pototo” and “El Mundo Entre las Manos.” After issuing two more singles, the group started touring Argentina, recording a self-titled album in 1969 and a second one in 1970. By the time “Muchacha (Ojos De Papel)” became Almendra’s major achievement, members in the band began showing up their differences, creating an uncomfortable working community. The group broke up soon after participating in the Buenos Aires Rock Festival. In 1979, Almendra was reunited to perform at Buenos Aires’ Obras Sanitarias, recording a live album and releasing El Valle Interior in 1980.

Artist: Mos Def (Yasiin Bey)
Song: Niggas in Poorest
Similar Artists: Nas, Common, Talbi Kweli
Description: Mos Def, who is still insisting that we all call him Yasiin Bey now, is launching a new project called Top 40 Underdog, in which he’ll remake and tweak some big radio hits. In the first entry, he takes on “Niggas In Paris,” the great and world-conquering smash from his more-famous buddies Kanye West and Jay-Z.Yasiin’s version is a freaked-out rant, but it’s not really a freestyle; it’s more a straight-up parody that tweaks the original into a broke-folks manifesto of sorts. And, of course, he’s given it the truly awkward title “Niggas In Poorest.”

Artist: Big Momma Thorton
Song: Hound Dog
Similar Artists: Ray Charles, Aretha Franklin, Marvin Gaye
Description: Little do people know, the song “Hound Dog” was NOT originally done by Elvis. The first person to perform this song was actually Big Momma Thorton. ”Hound Dog” held down the top slot on Billboard’s R&B charts for seven long weeks in 1953. Alas, Elvis Presley’s rocking 1956 cover was even bigger, effectively obscuring Thornton’s chief claim to immortality.

P.S HAPPY 100TH POST!!
Artist: Katy Perry and Muse (mashup)
Song: Pearl
Description: A mashup done of Katy Perry’s “Pearl” and an instrumental of Muse’s “Resistance.” They work together to make the song feel much more dramatic, which Muse’s backing instrumentals seem to do very well for her.

Artist: Coldplay
Song: Hurts Like Heaven
Album: Mylo Xyloto
Similar Artists: The Fray, Oasis, U2, The Killers
Description: After surfacing in 2000 with the breakthrough single “Yellow,”Coldplay quickly became one of the biggest bands of the new millennium, honing a mix of introspective Brit-pop and anthemic rock that landed the British quartet a near-permanent residence on record charts worldwide. Parachutes went multi-platinum in several countries and earned the band its first Grammy, but Coldplay continued to grow into the 2000s, topping their debut album’s success with higher record sales and an increased public profile.
Chris Martin (vocals/piano), Jon Buckland (guitar), Will Champion(drums), and Guy Berryman (bass) were all born into musical households. Martin, the eldest of five, began playing the piano as a young child and later took solace in the work of Tom Waits.Buckland, on the other hand, grew up with the heavy guitar sounds of Eric Clapton and Jimi Hendrix. Scotland native Berrymanpreferred funk to indie rock, thereby leaving him to play bass, while multi-instrumentalist Champion didn’t plan to be a drummer until he joined Coldplay’s lineup. The bandmates came together in 1996 while attending the University College of London, and the Safety EP was issued shortly after their first gig at a Manchester festival for unsigned bands. The release only saw 500 pressings, as did the subsequent Brothers & Sisters EP. Nevertheless, it was enough to win the band a U.K. deal with Parlophone Records in April 1999, and the five-track Blue Room EP arrived that fall.

Description: One of the greatest singers in the history of country music, Patsy Cline helped blaze a trail for female singers to assert themselves as an integral part of the Nashville-dominated country music industry. Cline has the most legendary aura of any female country singer, however, perhaps due to an early death that cut her off just after she had entered her prime.

Artist: Charles Aznavour
Song: She
Album: Greatest Golden Hits
Similar Artists: ANY ROMANTIC FRENCH ARTIST
Description: Charles Aznavour is perhaps the best-known French music hall entertainer in the world — renowned the world over for the bittersweet love songs he has written and sung, which seem to embody the essence of French popular song, and also for his appearances on screen in such wildly divergent fare as Shoot the Piano Player, Candy, and The Tin Drum. His status as the quintessential French popular culture icon is something of an irony for a man who identifies himself most closely with his Armenian heritage. Born Shahnour Varenagh Aznavourian, his French roots derive from the fact that his family fled the threat of massacre by the Turks — his father was a singer and sometime-restauranteur, while his mother was an actress and part-time seamstress. His father’s singing, done in a notably impassioned style, heavily influenced Aznavour’s approach to singing as a boy. Although he had a voracious appetite for music, he also had a serious impediment growing up, in the form of a paralyzed vocal cord that gave his voice a raspy quality.

Artist: The Pouges
Song: Body of an American
Similar Artists: Flogging Molly, The Dubliners
Description: By demonstrating that the spirit of punk could live in traditional Irish folk music, the Pogues were one of the most radical bands of the mid-’80s. Led by Shane MacGowan, whose slurred, incomprehensible voice often disguised the sheer poetry of his songs, the Pogues were undeniably political — not only were many of their songs explicitly in favor of working-class liberalism, but the wild, careening sound of their punk-injected folk was implicitly radical. While the band was clearly radical, they also had a wickedly warped sense of humor, which was abundantly clear on their biggest hit, the fractured Christmas carol “Fairy Tale of New York.” The group’s first three albums — Red Roses for Me, Rum Sodomy & the Lash, If I Should Fall From Grace With God — were widely praised in both Britain and America, and by 1988 they had earned substantial cult followings in both countries. Yet MacGowan’s darkly romantic, wasted lifestyle, which was so key to their spirit and success, ultimately proved to be their downfall. By the end of the decade, he had fallen deep into alcoholism and drug addiction, forcing the band to fire him if they wanted to survive. The Pogues carried on without him in the early ’90s, playing to a slowly shrinking audience, before finally disbanding in 1996.
